Chicago With A Different Purpose

My Kind of Town, Chicago Is...

I drove to the city today. (You probably aren’t surprised; I do that all the time.) I had a lunch date on Michigan Avenue with a couple of blogger friends and a brand representative. Lunch was great: restaurant right in the middle of Chicago, fantastic conversation, talk of upcoming opportunities, great food, sunshine streaming through the windows.

After lunch was over and we said our goodbyes, I decided to walk a few blocks up the street to my very favorite corner in the whole world: Michigan and Wacker (and the Chicago River). Vanessa wanted to walk too, so away we went, into the 99 degree heat. I felt all “summery”, the bottom of my maxi dress moving with the hot wind as I walked. I snapped just a couple of pictures as we stood on the Michigan Avenue bridge (actually, it’s now the DuSable bridge officially, but old habits die hard) and as we chatted, it occurred to me how long it’s been since I’ve just gone into the city for the day, just for fun, just for the purpose of being there. Over the past year it’s been an event here, a business lunch there, a workday…always a purpose, and then I turn around and head back to the suburbs.

Today I decided I need to change that. Soon, I’m going to take a day all to myself: a day for walking around, taking photos, admiring, adoring, absorbing. My kind of town, Chicago.

I’ll keep you posted.

I never do that either. As a matter of fact, if I did just go down there I wouldn’t even know what to do.

I wish I could walk around “my knid of town”. Or “Chicken In The Car And The Car Won’t Go” ” Chicago”
I still remember working down town at Saks Fifth Avenue (in the old building) for three years that was my first full time job, and I loved it. Secretary to the comptrolller. They had great employee sales too.
