Appreciating The (Hershey’s) Simple Pleasures

Eating chocolate makes us happy: it’s been proven through research. (And by the way, whomever came up with the idea to do the very first research study on that had to be a genius on Albert Einstein’s level.) When we eat chocolate, our brain releases endorphins and serotonin, making us feel less stressed out and a little bit euphoric at the same time.

Enjoying chocolate comes very naturally to me, unfortunately. I come by it honestly: my mom is a total chocoholic, always looking at a dessert menu looking for chocolate content before deciding what to eat at any restaurant as well as stocking up on (and often hiding) chocolate in her house. Okay, I may have done those things too. Maybe.

Unfortunately, if you’re a chocolate lover like me (and my mom) who also tries to pay attention to caloric and fat content, well, that chocolate euphoria is usually offset by the guilt of enjoying it in the first place.

That’s why I was really excited to find out that Hershey’s is now producing a new line of chocolates called Simple Pleasures. Hershey’s Simple Pleasures chocolates have 30 percent less fat than the average leading milk chocolates. The news made me as euphoric as a piece of chocolate would have, in fact. Grabbing a few of these doesn’t make me feel guilty: six of them have about 180 calories with 70 calories coming from fat, and truth be told if I just need a quick little taste of chocolate, I have no problem eating just one or two…do the math: two of them only have 60 calories with about 21 calories from fat!

(Sidenote: if you are on a Weight Watchers plan, one serving–six chocolates–is equivalent to 5 points, FYI.)

Hershey’s Simple Pleasures come in three varieties: Milk Chocolate with Vanilla Creme, Milk Chocolate with Chocolate Creme, and Dark Chocolate with Chocolate Creme. They are all delicious, seriously. (I may have an opened bag of each variety on my kitchen counter right now. Wanna come over?)

Hershey's Simple Pleasures

This summer, Hershey’s is inviting you (and me) to celebrate “Sweet Independence” by enjoying delicious chocolate AND feeling good about it. “Sweet Independence” can mean other things too: I for one am enjoying the simple pleasures of doing things around my house like decluttering, because less is more. And yes, it *could* be a little sad that I am so busy all the time that decluttering my house is something I enjoy…but the end result makes me SO HAPPY! What about you? Check out and sign the Hershey’s Simple Pleasures “Declaration of Sweet Independence” (on the Hershey’s Facebook page, HERE) to share with the world what you’re celebrating your independence from.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a craving for some chocolate. Gotta head to the kitchen…

Disclosure: I am thrilled to be working with The Motherhood on another campaign. I am being compensated for this post, but as usual all words and opinions are my own.
