Or I Could Just Keep Buying Bread Like I’ve Done My Entire Life.

We own what I consider to be an average amount of small kitchen appliances.

Wait. Better make that a slightly-above-average amount of small kitchen appliances, partly due to the following:

1. We were given one of those Cocomotion hot chocolate makers/mixers a few years ago (we don’t use it anymore but it’s cool so I keep it, you know, just in case).

2. When I purchased a large slow cooker a couple of years ago, I refused to get rid of the small one we already had (Great for entertaining!).

3. We have an electric fondue pot, which (I think) is probably uncommon in the average household, but very common in my family. We love fondue!

It’s safe to say that we have, for all intents and purposes, run out of small kitchen appliance storage space.

That’s why, when I found out that Jim’s employer–a huge conglomerate of consumer brands–owns a brand that makes juicers and he gets a nice employee discount, I made room on the countertop for our new juicer.

(The juicer I haven’t used yet. BUT I’M GOING TO, SHHH.)

A couple of nights ago, Jim and I were sitting on the couch together and looking at the company website, and then the conversation went a little wonky.

One moment he was clicking around the site and the next moment I saw…bread makers.

“Oh my gosh!!!!” I said in my outdoor voice. “BREAD MAKERS!!!”

I did not choose to remember his exact words (to be completely honest) but they sounded something like, “Cheezus Crust,” laughing incredulously, “we don’t need a bread maker! Are you kidding me? Where would we put it? And you haven’t even used that juicer yet!!!”

I must have responded as someone else, because the words that came out of my mouth couldn’t have been my own. “But how great would it be to have homemade bread Every! Single! Day!???”

“Since when do you want homemade bread every single day?” he asked.

I sputtered. “Since…since…SINCE I SAW THOSE BREAD MAKERS JUST NOW.”

I looked at him with my best puppy dog eyes and it wasn’t until we both started laughing that I snapped out of it and realized I was being ridiculous. We are out of space. And homemade bread on a daily basis has to be overrated, right?

Right???

Maybe if I get rid of that Cocomotion.

I mean, homemade bread, you guys!

Also, I guess I need to work on the puppy-dog-eye thing.

Not for nothing, but I absolutely ADORE my bread machine and especially this time of year. GO FOR IT!!! Oh, and by the way, I’m still waiting on the crock pot that also folds clothes. Please tell Jim to get on that, quick. Thanks. Hi!

I’m NOT a gadget collector. Matter of fact, I am the epitome of anti-hoarder. However, I make our own bread (unless we are in a jam and need a quick store bought loaf.) I use the hell out of my bread machine, but I don’t use it to bake. I use it strictly for the “dough” cycle. It takes me less than 3 minutes to throw in the ingredients. It does all the knead, rise, knead, rise for the next hour and twenty minutes…which means I can go do something else! I take out the dough, give it a few quick kneads, throw in a pan, let it rise for 45 minutes and bake for 30 in the oven. If you REALLY want to do nothing else, go ahead and let the machine bake it too…I just don’t like the browning or the shape of my bread machine bread. Matter of fact, I’m going to go throw a loaf in now. 🙂

Challah so good it will put you in a carb coma for the rest of Shabbat. We love our breadmaker, My office is just off the kitchen and nearly one half of my 8-feet reach-in closet is dedicated to appliances–all of which get used, often seasonally: rice cooker, slow cooker, bread machine, juicer (my son’s), ice-cream maker and steamer (my husband’s- I think it’s a pain to clean, and waffle-maker. Interestingly, I don’t have a stand mixer or proper food processor, but I have an older Ninja chopper that stays in the kitchen..

Bottom line is your bottom line: if you like or need to limit your car intake, don’t by a breadmaker. If you want the best, freshest preservative free bread a gal can have, buy the breadmaker.

I love my little breadmaker. Granted, it stays put up until about this time of year. I use it to prep the dough for homemade cinnamon rolls. And also, I want a juicer. Moving in with Mark was an experience. We’ve still got crap stacked every so precariously but still within reach…because getting the step stool for a thing that I want…SIGH. Gah. Like…that is just soo much work.

When we moved into our house, I wondered what I was going to do with all of the cupboard space. I don’t have a spec left.

I would only buy a breadmaker if I had the recipe for my favorite whole grain bread; that would be amazing.

I have one. I rarely use it. For my family, it doesn’t make enough. A few years ago I made all our bread. In the oven. Because my bread maker can’t run more than once a day (dumb if you ask me). In the oven I could do four loaves at once. Which sounds like a lot, but they are smaller than store bought loaves.
My favorite fun bread is made in my Dutch oven. Second favorite fun bread in bread maker. So that’s where it ranks in my kitchen.

Bread makers are just plain fun. I have a Zojirushi that I’ve had for almost 10 years and it’s still plugging away. Fun fact: some bread makers have a jam making function, cake making function AND I just learned you can make a killer risotto in them. Not kidding!
