Birthday Presents Good Enough To Eat!

My sister Julesie had a birthday on Friday, and because of the fitness conference I had this weekend–recap post is in progress–and the fact that the younger boy had the Homecoming Dance on Saturday night, we had to schedule the birthday festivities for this evening. We went out to a favorite restaurant, and then it was, of course, time for rainbow cake. Regular readers already know that the rainbow cake is a staple of almost all of our family birthday celebrations: our mom has made us rainbow cakes since we can remember, and I’ve carried on the tradition. (Want a partial look back? Click this.) The recipe itself is phenomenal:…

How To Drive All Over Chicagoland Without Seeing A Thing. Almost.

You people never cease to amaze me. I slipped a little somethin’ somethin’ into yesterday’s post, wondering if anyone would catch it, and I was thrilled when I got Sue’s comment: “The most perplexing part of your post was this: ‘most of which were closed (I didn’t check hours and such before we got on the road)’ You are the organized travel/event queen! Could there be a chink in your armor?” Well SUE, of course there could be! I’m not perfect, you know! Here’s what happened. It was a Friday in the summer, a couple of years ago. Julesie was not working that day, and so we arranged to take…

    Rock and Rainbows

Our family has always had the most fun on our official “Fab Five” outings and events. (If you’re new here, the Fab Five is made up of me, Jim, our sons, and my sister Julesie.) One of our best-known adventures here on the Scrawl was the time when (two years ago) we got together to make international burgers–including a German burger with mustard and sauerkraut on it, which my German twin Kat was disgusted by–in honor of the premiere of “The Amazing Race”, one of our favorite shows. This past weekend, the older boy came home from college for a special Fab Five event: attending a live performance of the…

Here we go: Gemütlichkeit (Hospitality) Apparently I Should Be Eating More Marshmallows (about grocery shopping in Germany) Above God and Everybody (The Zugspitze) Bursting At The Seams, I Had To Put One Elsewhere (Link to my Music Mamas post about German music) These Walls Were Made For Walkin’ (Our Visit to Rothenburg ob der Tauber) Germany…

Random Thoughts and Pictures: German Style (Or, “I Guess It’ll Have To Go Here”)

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. (Is that really true? Do all good things really have to come to an end? I suspect not.) If you are still reading this after so many days of my blogging about my family trip to Germany, I owe you a huge thanks for sticking around. I feel like the annoying relative who showed up unannounced with five thousand slides from her summer vacation, and you were held hostage without so much as a bathroom break. In all, I’ve done (including this one) eighteen posts about my trip since I returned home. (I was gone for eight days, including travel!) You…
