Amazing Moments in Parenthood

Whenever I speak with the parents of really young kids, they almost always comment on “how lucky” I am that I don’t have to change diapers anymore or do any number of assorted tasks related to having really little ones. In an attempt to be encouraging, I say things like, “Don’t worry, your kids will gradually become more and more self-sufficient as they grow. In fact, once they can make their own breakfast in the morning, you’re on your way!” (That’s when whomever I’m talking to usually sighs as their eyes glaze over at the happy thought of what I said.)

It was a huge milestone in this house, when my boys could assemble a bowl of cereal (okay, or grab a Pop Tart) for themselves. HUGE. It was the end of an era, and the beginning of a new one. I thought that was the greatest. As it turns out, I was wrong.

Another milestone presented itself to me–quite unexpectedly–today, however, one that makes me very, very happy. Forget that nonsense about how great it is when your kids can make their own breakfast…

…because when you’ve got kids who can make their own calls to tech support? Wow. That’s really something, you know?

hehe That has to be a great moment in parenting history!

When the boy was in 3rd grade, I decided that it was time for him to start packing his own lunch for school. He took the makings for a pbj to the table and started painstakingly making his sandwich. Then, he turned around to go into the kitchen to get a sandwich bag and when he turned back around, the sandwich was gone and Duke was licking his chops. I heard yelling and I came running. When I found out what happened, I told him that practice makes perfect and make another sandwich, but next time, put it where the dog couldn't reach it. 😉

Now THAT is one I hadn't been looking for. I'll have to remember it. I will admit that it's nice not worrying about who is going up or down stairs or being able to send them off to play together unsupervised (IN the house). But Little Miss taking a 3 hour nap today? That is one thing I miss about the little kids. She was SO much happier after it.

Jealous! My daughter can make mac & cheese, or get a bowl of cereal, but when my hard drive crashed I was out of luck.
