I’ve Been Thinking About You

Jim and I have always been *that* kind of couple, the kind that checks in with each other a couple of times each day, the kind that connects over dinner and while relaxing in the evening…communicators.

His time in the Navy way back in the day was most difficult for us, as it was before the internet and cell phones. When he was out to sea for months at a time, we relied on the rare phone call when he was in port and actual written letters, delivered sporadically on both ends.

When he was a civilian again, we were better able to stay in touch during the work day. It’s always been nice to be able to give him a quick call to ask a question if I had one, and vice versa. When we added unlimited texting to our cell phones, it was even easier (and less intrusive on both ends).

He recently started a new job that is keeping him more out of touch than usual: we don’t connect as much during the day–even by text–because he’s very, very busy. He’s also traveling a little bit again.

We’re making technology work for us, though. Facetime is our new friend when he’s on business trips. Of course there’s still texting, and I recently even created a Google Doc grocery list so we can both add to it whenever we think of something, and then whoever happens to stop at the store can just pull up the list and grab what we need.

He’s out of the country on a business trip this week and we were prepared for very little communication. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised to find that he had thought of a way to let me know he was thinking of me via our Google Doc grocery list.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. I think I’ll keep him.
