We invited Julesie over today for a late birthday celebration, which meant one thing: Rainbow Cake! I make rainbow cake for all of our special family occasions; it’s a family tradition that our mom started when we were little ones. One of the most memorable cakes our mom ever made was for Julesie’s third (we think) birthday: it was Cookie Monster. The reason we (and some of our relatives) still talk about that cake today is because all of that dark blue icing made the entire insides of our mouths, our tongues, and our lips blue for the rest of the day. It was quite comical. I have made Julesie…

To Everything, There Is A Season
Labor Day, though this year almost three weeks before the actual beginning of autumn (my favorite season), is the unofficial end of summer. Boo-yah: that’s today! This summer was really good, but it was so…busy! It seems like I have two different sorts of friends: those who can’t WAIT for the school year to end so they can enjoy summer, and those who can’t WAIT for the summer to end so their kids will go back to school already. More Like A Drive-By Than a Drive-Thru
My first real job outside of babysitting was working for McDonald’s. I adored that job. I’ve written about it before, briefly, and instead of having you read that entire post (because I listed all the jobs I’ve ever had, with a paragraph on each!) I’ll just excerpt it here: “I, along with a bunch of my friends, “opened” the brand-new McD’s right outside the grounds of our high school. I was the one in the drive thru, yelling at everyone to hurry up because we had to get these cars through in 30 seconds. We had a great time working together. We did things like cook up a whole basket…

The Dance
The four of us barge into the house through the front door, our hands loaded with plastic grocery bags. The twenty reusable bags I received at BlogHer are still in my trunk, empty, due to my shoddy memory at the time we parked in the store lot. I’ll bring them in next time, really. We pile the grocery bags on every available surface, all of us in a hurry, encouraged by the high-pitched barking coming from our yappy beagle, Roxie, as her entire back end sways from right to left due to the force of her wagging tail. She is impatiently waiting to be released from her crate in order…

O-nay Roblem-pay
Shew. As you might recall, yesterday was the opening day for a movie that the 17 year old and I have been dying to see. If you don’t recall this (or are a new reader), you’ll want to get the background stories. Click here first, and then here. Go ahead, I’ll wait. So, we saw it. The end. Just kidding! I told you I’d keep you posted. Here’s what happened. I told the younger boy that he could invite a friend or two and go with us to the theater, but to a different movie (obviously). I would have felt like a mean mom, taking the older one to a…
