    Wanderlust

I’ve been thinking a lot about our 2010 family trip to Germany. This is partially due to the fact that I had a couple of our favorite pictures from that trip framed for our remodeled bathroom, and partially due to the fact that, well, fantasizing about another Germany trip is a part of my regular routine. I would love to go back there NOW. If I could, I would make my way around the entire country, mostly by train. Maybe I’d fly from Chicago to Hamburg first and see what’s going on up there in the north, because I’ve never been to that part of Germany. From Hamburg I’d probably…

Speeding Its Way Across The Globe Like Ryan Gosling, Just In Time For Halloween

D called me a couple of weeks ago to ask for my assistance in ordering a vital part his Halloween costume from an eBay seller. His college, like most others, has lots of fun activities going on for the holiday and he’s cared more about his costume in the last couple of years than he has since he was about eleven years old. “Sure,” I said, “What are you going to be this year?” “The Driver from the (Ryan Gosling) movie ‘Drive’.” I haven’t yet seen the movie so I had to go off of his excitement–and my sister’s enthusiastic endorsement of his idea–as I opened up my laptop to…

Remembrance At The National September 11 Memorial

One thing I wanted to do when I was in New York City last month was visit the National September 11 Memorial, which opened in 2011. I made reservations for myself and a group of friends and it was literally our first destination once we all arrived at the hotel. The weather was appropriately dark and drizzly. As the four of us somberly made our way to Ground Zero and then through the security stations, we really had no idea how stunning (in so many ways) the memorial would be. It’s huge. I mean, it’s supposed to be huge, because it’s set in the footprints of the Twin Towers, and…

A Visit To Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial

Like most others, my family has a bunch of different interests. Take television, for example. I love sitcoms and a little bit of reality tv (don’t judge). Jim loves anything on the History channel. D loves to watch shows like “Storage Wars” with a little bit of “Mythbusters” on the side. J overlaps all of us, but his go-to show as of late is “Friends”. My sister likes all kinds of tv, from British shows to reality to documentaries to sitcoms. That’s just one example…don’t even get me started on music, sports teams, food, or any other category (times of day, even!) because all five of us run the gamut.…

Lake Erie Shores And Islands: A Fun And Easy Trip For Chicago Families! (part 2)

Welcome to Post #2 about our family trip to the Sandusky, Ohio area! I have tons of pictures to share with you from our second day of the trip (and third morning before we got back on the road to Chicago in the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid that General Motors let us use: thanks again, GM!). But first, if you missed Day One you should probably catch up before reading this post. Click here to experience Day One. I’ll wait. We spent Friday and Saturday nights at the Maui Sands Hotel, which has just recently reopened. (The pool is open, but the waterpark doesn’t open until 2013!) We thought the rooms…
