Creative Parenting 101: The Tooth Fairy Makes Mistakes Too, You Know!

A couple of weeks ago, I read this Twitter tweet from Soapbox Mom: feeling awful b/c the tooth fairy forgot to visit my son… 09:59 PM August 22, 2008 from web The same thing happened to us a few years back, when the now-13-year-old lost a tooth, and to make matters worse, it was only his second one. We couldn’t believe that this could happen; I mean, what was the tooth fairy doing with her time, just sitting on her lazy butt watching television and then going straight to bed right after the news, forgetting that this boy had that little white tooth packaged up for her, underneath his pillow?…

Creative Parenting 101: The Magic of Blankets

It recently occurred to me that I should mix in a few stories of my parents’ Creative Parenting 101. After all, it is partly because of them that I am the type of creative person and parent that I am today, and I can say that without a doubt my sister and I turned out to be wonderfully fabulous individuals so I know that they did a bunch of stuff correctly. And without a book or anything! Maybe this will be information you can use! Who knows??? This story involves a certain pink blanket that we kept in the car. We called it the Pee Pee Blanket. No, I’m not…

Creative Parenting 101: When The Kid Hints That He Needs Extra Parenting, It’s Time To Take Action

The boys left for a week of Boy Scout summer camp yesterday. Were they excited? Yes…and no. The sixteen-year-old was literally bouncing with happiness at the thought of leaving for camp—for many reasons but mainly because the Troop was headed back to his favorite camp, which he hasn’t seen in three years. As I sat at the computer on Saturday evening, he was sitting on my exercise ball, bouncing away as he told me of his plans to set up his hammock and sleep there rather than in his tent. When he was younger, many of the older boys did this and they were quite the envy of the rest…

Creative Parenting 101: Turning Rules Into a Road Map

“I want to learn someday how to drive a car.”From the Thankful Journal, 1999 and almost seven years old Well folks, that day is here. Actually, he has been learning to drive a car for almost a year now, thanks to the State of Illinois’ requirements for new drivers: he needed 50 hours on his permit before obtaining an actual license. The thirteen-year-old will need 100 hours, due to the requirements recently increasing again. I’m fine with it. There have been many teen-aged deaths due to car accidents over the past many years and Illinois is doing something about it (probably–hopefully–along with many other states. Each hour behind the wheel…

Creative Parenting 101: Discipline Can Teach a Lesson AND Be Entertaining!

When the older boy was approaching seven years old, I started to notice that he was taking certain things for granted. It was really ticking me off, so I discovered (either in a magazine or on tv, can’t remember exactly) what I thought at the time was a really great idea…and now I can say it was Pure Genius. I made him start a “Thankful Journal”. Each day, I had him write about two or three things that he was thankful for in a blank book that I had purchased especially for this purpose. It made him think, it gave him much-needed writing practice, and gave us great conversation starters.…

Creative Parenting 101: Presenting the Rules Before The Game Means Fewer Problems in the Second Half

I got my U.S. Cellular bill on Wednesday and was slightly surprised to see some roaming charges (only $14, but that’s like 2 gallons of gas!) on it from Jim’s last business trip. I encouraged him to use his cell to call us at home because I thought our plan had 75 minutes of roaming included each month. I was wrong. I called to check into it and we have only 45 roaming minutes included. Okay. Whatever. At least now I know, and I will pay that $14 secure in knowing that I’m not getting ripped off with improper billing. While I was on the phone with the Customer Service…

Creative Parenting 101: Learn What Works, and Use It

Back in the days when I was student teaching, about to earn my B.S. in Elementary Education from Old Dominion University, I was confident in the subject matter I was teaching to the 6th graders that were in my charge. I was confident in my creativity and ability to plan interesting lessons. I was NOT confident in my classroom management skills. Even though there’s a whole semester class called Classroom Management, it’s one of those things that is truly learned while on-the-job. This particular group of 6th graders was very chatty, and when you mix chatty kids with a student teacher who is trying to step out of the box…
