I have a reputation for being organized (or at least making it look like I am!). I have a reputation for going above and beyond, and I have a reputation for being overly busy. I have a reputation for getting things done. Bear in mind I’m not typing those words with any bit of ego: if you know me, you get it. Every now and then someone will say to me (either verbally or via internet) something along the lines of “I wish I could be like you.” It happened again today, thanks to my dear, sweet friend from north of the border (The Illinois/Wisconsin border, that is). She typed…

Lessons Learned As A Hotel Manager’s Daughter
Jim and I stayed in a hotel over the weekend and each time we left the room I followed my usual “tidying up for the housekeeper” protocol. Starting in the bathroom, I toss my cosmetics into my makeup bag and scoot that into the corner. I make sure our toothbrushes and toothpaste are off to the side, and put Jim’s stuff in a pile. I go back into the bedroom area and make sure all of our clothes…

For The Zumba Newbie In The Back Row
I always admire people who walk into a group fitness studio for the first time and aren’t afraid to speak to the instructor, whether it’s to say hello or ask a question. When you asked the instructor what you should do, strategy-wise, if you couldn’t “get” all of the movements during class, she told you it was a great question. Indeed, it was. Trying any new class can be intimidating and worrisome, but Zumba moves quickly and as much as it’s supposed to be about having fun, if you’re worried about it the fun doesn’t come easily. She answered your question by telling you to focus on either the arm…

Go Solo, Go! (Just Go.)
Last week while in Columbus I was enjoying dinner with some new friends and one said, “Melisa, I think it’s so great that you and your husband travel alone sometimes.” Naturally, I agreed wholeheartedly, and I’ll tell you why. It’s not that I don’t enjoy traveling with Jim, because I do (very much!). It’s not even that I prefer solo travel, because I don’t. It’s just a different kind of experience. I love any and all kinds of travel: solo, with Jim, with the whole family, with friends…get it? I LOVE TRAVEL. It’s definitely not that I need to get away from home and my family. I have found that…

How To Make Portillo’s Chopped Salad At Home (& Dazzle Your Family!)
I am not–and never will be–a food blogger. (I’m guessing you’re not here for the recipes, anyway. So we’re good.) That said, I do enjoy food, and I am pretty good at making delicious things to eat. Sometimes I will prepare a family favorite for dinner and think, “I should share this on the blog.” Then I think, “But I’m not a food blogger, and the idea of staging the food for the pretty pictures makes me feel a little nauseous,” so I don’t share. Except just this once. I happen to have created a family favorite when I started making Portillo’s chopped salad at home, and I think you…
