    What Would Mario Do?

Welcome to Part 853* of my “Weather’s Better in the Bahamas” series! Today I actually have a horror story to tell you, right out of the Bahamas. Don’t worry; I’ve still got pretty pictures AND there’s a happy ending. One of the activities we were lucky enough to partake in while we were there was snorkeling. I had never snorkeled before**, and neither had the older boy. We were totally stoked to wake up on the morning of our first full day on the Pecheur and find out that the morning would be spent snorkeling. We were also totally stoked to discover this view, once we took a short sail…

    Bahamian Interlude

Here’s a phone conversation* I had with Weaselmomma yesterday evening. Enjoy! Weaselmomma (WM): I’ve just gotta get outta here. This winter is driving me crazy. Really, no joke: I’m getting ready to lose it over here! Me (Me): Uh-huh. WM: The Mom 2.0 Summit is in Houston and I am dying to get there. Actually, I could care less about the conference itself, really: I just need to get somewhere WARM! It’s too flippin’ cold! I NEED SUN. Me: Uh-huh. WM: The problem is, even if I could get the cash together to go there, Mr. Weasel, the love of my life, the father of my children, the peanut butter…

    Take a Flying Leap

Welcome to yet another post in the “Weather’s Better in the Bahamas” series, which is my attempt to keep us all warm this winter. Or something like that. Kids these days have all kinds of technology at their fingertips, from cell phones to mp3 players to handheld game systems to computers. Their brains don’t shut off much. Parents these days have a hard time wondering why their childrens’ imaginations seem stunted at times, or why, when “stuck” in a situation where they have no access to their gadgets, they whine and complain as if they are going to die from boredom. (Don’t even get me started on the vehicles that…

I Wondered Which One of the Boys Would Be the First To Try and Ride One.

The “Weather’s Better in the Bahamas”, you know, and that’s why I’m doing this series of posts devoted to a place that is decidedly UNwinterlike. Click here to read yesterday’s post, which includes information about the circumstances that took the older boy and me to this gorgeous slice of heaven on earth. We saw some beautiful sights, of course, including this sparkly blue water: This rainbow: This beach: And these dolphins. One day we were just sailing along and someone noticed this group of six or seven dolphins keeping pace with our boat. The thrill of seeing them in their own environment (as opposed to a show at Sea World)…

Ahoy, Me Hearties! We’re Givin’ Winter The Ole’ Heave Ho! (Arghh!)

Welcome to Part Three of my “Weather’s Better in the Bahamas” series, the purpose of which is to keep me and my readers (you) firmly ensconced in the denial of the winter season that is actually happening right now. Catch Part One here and Part Two here, by the way. Where did I leave off? Oh yes, PIRATES. The older boy and I were in the Bahamas for a Boy Scout High Adventure trip; these trips are always great. In our troop, you have to be at least fourteen years old and have attained the First Class rank in order to participate, and the trips are the biggest “carrots” they…

I Could Live There In a Bahamian Minute

Part Two of my “Weather’s Better in the Bahamas” series–you know, the one in which I totally act like it’s not the middle of winter around here–is chock-full of lovely color. Today’s photos, like the one in yesterday’s post, were also taken on Great Guana Cay (by me, with my dented, pink-duct-taped Olympus C-60) during the trip I took with the older boy and our Boy Scout Troop. The Bahamas High Adventure was the trip of a lifetime; we spent nearly a week on a pirate ship (you’ll get that story tomorrow) in one of the most beautiful settings I’ve ever had the privilege to enjoy personally. It’s your turn…

Officially Over It. How ‘Bout You?

Although for once, we Chicagoans have no real reason to complain about the weather–we’re not in the wide “Snowpocalypse” area, for once–I’m quite tired of seeing nothing but grayness, and I miss the sun dearly. For that reason, and to offer a ray of hope to my friends who are currently getting buried under as much as thirty inches of the white stuff, this blog will be in denial of winter for the next few days. Welcome to the “Weather’s Better In The Bahamas” Series! Close your eyes and imagine… Wait, don’t. If you close your eyes, you wouldn’t be able to focus on this: Great Guana Cay, Bahamas Try…
