The Dog Eats People Food, So…Why Not?

ff Note: This post is part of Fatherhood Friday at Dad Blogs, where all the cool kids are hanging out. (Moms are welcome over there!) Welcome to my visitors from DB; thanks for stopping in!

I am really happy with the way I was raised. My parents, though somewhat strict compared to others, were on a mission to raise their two girls well, and as you all know, they did a great job. Julesie and I are models of society. *giggles*

Seriously. We are.

Anyway, when we’re all together, the Fab Five and my/our Mom and Dad, the same funny stories are repeated over and over again. I’m not going to spill a bunch of them right now, but I have to tell you that without a doubt, when we’re story-tellin’, our parents always comment that Julesie and I “only remember the bad stuff.”

Not true.

It’s just that the “bad stuff” is frickin’ funny. (Note: our “bad stuff” would be the “incredibly good stuff” for any person who thinks they had a bad childhood. Our “bad stuff” is not literally bad. Just sayin’.)

There’s lots of good stuff that is great fodder for conversation. For example, though I was mortified at the time, when I was a teenager, my Dad used to eat Milk Bone Dog Treats in front of my friends. To get a laugh. (My Dad loves attention.)

Obviously, for a girl who is anywhere between fourteen and seventeen, this type of behavior is not only frowned on but is an out-and-out violation of the Parents of Teenagers Code, as written by teenagers. Teens, if they actually communicate with their parents, mainly want their parents to stay on the better side of the fine line between cool and totally embarrassing.

Of course, it also totally goes above and beyond the guidelines of the Parents of Teenagers Code, as written by parents. Parents, if they actually communicate with their teens, want to be considered “cool and somewhat impressive” by their kids’ friends, but don’t want to become old fuddy-duddys just because their kids are growing up.

Back to the Milk Bones. Embarrassing. They can’t even taste that good, but Dad always said they were delicious. I was horrified each and every time he did this as if I had never seen it before, and totally knew he was making me a weirdo among my friends.

Guess what? Of course, as a teenager who thought she knew everything, I was wrong.

My friends thought my Dad was awesome. (They still do.)

I thought that his Milk Bone days ended ages ago, until one day last year when he and I were talking. He was telling me what happened at work that morning. You see, he’s the general manager of a hotel. A hotel that welcomes small dogs.

Apparently a woman was checking in with her little canine buddy, and my Dad pulled the container of Milk Bones out from behind the front desk. I don’t remember how he said the conversation went, but I know that it ended with one of those Milk Bones ending up in his mouth.

He didn’t say if the lady thought he was cool and somewhat impressive.

Your family rocks. I totally would have found your dad cool (let alone entertaining). Just as cool as my dad filling up teens with coffee. Now I wonder if he wanted them to go home to their parent’s all hyped up. LOL. Ok we were already in our late teens. Still 🙂

    Your Dad rocks.

And how does Jim impress today’s youth?

You’re so completely lucky. Unfortunately, my family had so many problems when I was growing up there is no looking back and happy reminiscing. I envy you.

Dads are great. I remember being so embarrassed by my dad….now I’m the dad and my kids, especially my 11 years old, feel the shame. I’m thankful I have a great dad, it makes all the difference.

  • Sue

I have a great dad too, but I don’t think he ever ate Milkbones. Maybe he would it they had a little cheese and pepperoni on them?

  • Momo Fali

During a game of Truth or Dare, I was dared to eat a dog bone. I did. Then I threw up. Your dad is my hero.

Liva-snaps. Childhood memories. We lived in the middle of nowhere and we were bored…leave me alone! lol

Ok, that’s just weird!! I can imagine they probably don’t taste to awful but ick!!

I think I’d like your dad just fine!! 🙂

When I was about 16 or so my dad would love to tell my friends mind numbingly disturbing stories about his ex-wives (think sexual likes and dislikes, habits etc) Many are still scared to this very day.

I was probably never more wrong about anything than I was my dad. He always embarassed me to death but looking back he was really a cool dad. I guess it is just the way teenagers are for better or worse.

He never ate milk bones though. That is hilarious.

And here I was hoping that *you* would be passing this tradition on to your children. Alas and alack.

And I can TOTALLY picture the conversation with that woman “not even fit for my dog” — and she ummm had to eat her words?

I don’t remember my Dad ever embarrassing me, that was (and sometimes still is) Mom’s job! Want an example to show I am not still in the teenager phase when I say that? One time we were on campus after checking out the bookstore while I was still an undergrad (think almost 22). We went over to the science building to check something out on the computer and I saw my micro professor and decided to introduce them. My mother then told her I talk about her ALL the time (not really true, I talked about her class more than her I think) and then stuck her head in the prof’s office and looked around all dramatic like.

Prof, “What are you looking for?”
    Mom, “Your pedestal.”
    Prof, “I don’t have one…”
Mom, “The one Karen gave you!”
Prof, “Karen, you are turning red.”
(she had amazing observational skillz, lol)

I never understood that old saying about wishing the ground would swallow you up more than at that moment, lol. And so if either of your boychildren complain send them to me, I will kick their butts in a game of, “My momma is way more embarrassing than your momma” and they will probably give you a big hug and tell you how awesome you are after! I love my mom but she is such a dork,Daddy is too but in a different way, so now you know where I get it from, dork + dork = dork ;).

lol..as a kid, i use to eat dog bisquits. I toatlly forgot about that…thanks for the horrible flashback. In case anyone was wondering, they were dry. Oh, happy fatherhood friday.

For the record, I think your dad rocks! (Of course I would have been horrified as a teen if my dad pulled that stunt too.) Ironically, I often feel sorry for my kids when my hubby tries to interact with their friends… Until one day recently when my daughter mentioned that all of her friends think her dad is HILARIOUS. I was perplexed. Does this mean that I’M the uncool parent?

  • ShankRabbit

Hey! Come on! Milk bones aren’t THAT bad. Dip them in salsa and they are actually pretty good!

You’re dad is awesome. I need to take pointers from him.

  • ciara

hehe i would have thought that embarrassing, too, but funny what kids think is cool. your dad sounds fun. i'm thinking an adult might not appreciate the eating of milk bones as much lol my dad never ate them, but my brother's friends ate that & dog food back in the day. yuck.

  • WeaselMomma

Too funny! What does this say about your Mom’s cooking if Dad thought Dog Biscuits were pretty good?

  • Super Mega Dad

    Too funny!

I think I’ll try Pupperoni’s when my kids hit that teenage years. Milk Bones just sound so DRY. 😉

  • nonnasnonsense
