Last Day.

My first-born son left the house a few moments ago. He had a spring in his step, a sparkle in his eyes, and a smile on his face: not typical characteristics possessed by him on a school day, but today is special.

Today is his last day of high school, ever.

EVER.

As this weekend’s insanity of relatives and graduation festivities approaches, I find myself reflecting on my own high school graduation (so many, many years ago…). I remember how pretty I felt in my blue cap and gown. I spent the day hugging friends, giddily talking about how excited we were to be finished and able to move onward and upward. The possibilities for all of us were endless; on that day, the ceremony that is called “Commencement” finally felt less like the end of something and more like a new beginning. It was one of the biggest days of my life to that point, and I couldn’t even imagine how many bigger and more thrilling days were to come.

Though the details of that busy time are a little blurry and I no longer hold my graduation day up as one of the top five or ten major events in my life, it was truly something. It was a Start.

So this week, while a bit bittersweet because graduation means my “baby” is nearly a full-fledged adult, I’m focusing on the Sweet parts.

There’s a whole world out there waiting for him, full of possibilities and a bright future for the taking.

How lucky I am, to get to see him grab it.
