It was just a few weeks ago that I went to Anicca Float Club for my first “float”, a sensory deprivation experience that takes place in a tank containing salt-filled water, ten inches deep.
I loved it.
Since then I’ve floated twice more, and I still love it. The post about my first experience includes a lot of the nuts and bolts about the experience. This time I wanted to write a little bit about how each float was different, or the same, and how I’ve progressed.
My first float was at noon, and I wanted to schedule the next two at different times to see if my body would react differently (Keep in mind that this is MY experience; everyone is unique and what might work for me may not work for you.). I scheduled my second float at 8:00 p.m., thinking that a pre-bedtime float would be awesome.
The float was a lovely break from the world, but it was my least favorite out of the three in that I didn’t “get into the zone” and fall asleep like I had done the first time. Upon reflection I wondered if, for me, evening floats aren’t quite as relaxing because my brain has been working hard for fourteen hours already and an hour isn’t long enough to let go of it all. That second float was really nice in the sense that since I knew what I was doing I wasn’t as obsessed with my breathing, and I did have “awake dreams”, which was kind of cool.
That night I slept pretty well. I woke up a few times like I normally do but I wasn’t wide awake and I found it easy to go back to sleep. So perhaps for me, the rewards of an evening float are reaped later!
My third float was at 10:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning. It was heavenly. When I got into the tank I relaxed into the float immediately and actually focused on my breathing to try and zone myself out more quickly. Just when I felt like it wasn’t working, it did. I estimate that I had probably about thirty minutes of that in-and-out sleep zone and, in the last fifteen minutes of the float I was wide awake and feeling refreshed. I even came up with a great idea for work while I was in there, so I think I’m a fan of a weekend morning float.
I sat and chatted with co-owner Lindsay for about forty-five minutes after my float (they offer water and tea before you go home!) and left Anicca Float Club feeling happy, relaxed, and ready to enjoy the rest of my day.
I highly recommend floating, you guys. If you happen to live in my area, go see Lindsay and Paul. They’ll take such good care of you. Also, coming this winter at Anicca Float Club: late-night, extended-time floats on the weekends. I can’t wait to try one of those!
