    Bean’s Chicago Tour 2010

I just returned home from a jam-packed weekend in the city with Kate and Bean. You would think, being downtown with a girl of almost-six, that we wouldn’t see very much. Well, you’d be wrong! It’s actually faster to see certain things with a young kid, if you just relax and let them “drive”. In two days, we went to Millennium Park, the Adler Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Field Museum, and the Sears “I’ll never call it Willis” Tower. We also spent a bunch of time watching scenes from “Transformers 3” being shot right outside our hotel. One of the things that was…

There Are Worse Addictions, To Be Sure.

Jim, the younger boy and I went into the city (again) last weekend. As I was driving us out of the parking garage to head home after a great show at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater on Navy Pier, I was excitedly saying, “Oh, I LOVE this city!” like I always do whenever I am there (or whenever I see the skyline from afar, or when I talk about it, or when I read about it, or when I see it on television, or…), when Jim said, “You know, you really need an intervention.” What the what? “I certainly do NOT!” I replied. Then, mocking me, he started making up all…

Introducing Chicago To a Five (Nearly Six!) Year Old

As if my summer plans couldn’t get any better, what with the Blogher conference in New York City and our trip to Munich, oh, and my evening with Michelle and the B-52s which is coming up soon…Kate and Bean are coming to Chicago for a visit! Spending time in the city with a youngster such as the smart, spunky, and adorable Bean is a much different experience from time in the city with teenagers (though just as fun!), and Kate and I have been e-mailing back and forth, trying to figure out how much we can pack in. Bean has her own idea, though, and you can read about it…elsewhere.…

When One Door Closes, Another One Opens…

Since (and because) I’ve been blogging here at Suburban Scrawl, I’ve been given many opportunities to write in other places, for other audiences. One of those opportunities is at the top of my favorites: when Jill Asher of the Silicon Valley Moms Group called to tell me that my application to write for the Chicago Moms Blog was accepted and they were excited to have me on board, I was beyond thrilled, because I love Chicago, I love to write, and, uh, I’m a Mom. Perfect fit. In the short time I’ve been a part of this fabulous group of women, I have attended a super huge event (which led…

Not As Dangerous As Tina Fey & Steve Carrell’s Version, But Our Date Night Was Pretty Exciting, Too.

Our date night last night turned out to be way more interesting (and even exciting!) than we expected. First of all, we left our house in the western burbs at about 7:30 p.m. The Blue Man Group show (which the older boy and his girlfriend were attending: read yesterday’s post if you missed it!) was at 10:00 p.m., and we wanted to leave plenty of time in case the Eisenhower was as terrible as it usually is. We were shooting to get to the Lakeview area between 9-9:30. Miracle of miracles, it only took us about 45 minutes to get there, which left us with a new issue: what to…
