A Great Day + SLEEP = The Perfect Gift

I hope all of you mothers out there (and I mean that in the nicest way) had a great day yesterday. I had a wonderfully low-key day, which is exactly how I like it. Each and every year, Jim apologizes for “sucking at Mother’s Day”, but in fact each and every year he gets it exactly right. Some moms really enjoy being fussed over all day long on Mother’s Day: I don’t. I just want to be “allowed” to do what I want to do. I don’t like a scripted Mother’s Day. I don’t need for everyone to hang around nearby to take care of my every whim. We’re running…

Boy Scouts Should Really Be a Dad-Son Thing. Unless Mom Wants In.

Note: This post is part of Fatherhood Friday at Dad Blogs, where all the cool kids are hanging out. (Moms are welcome over there!) Welcome to my visitors from DB; thanks for stopping in! I always looked at Boy Scouts as something Dads should do with their sons. Still do, really. I think it’s important for sons to spend time with their father, quality time in which there is learning, male bonding, role-modeling, and other various benefits that come from the mom not being around. The fact is, because of our mostly traditional family situation (Jim has always worked full time and I have always–except for a two-year period during…

    It’s The Little Things

If you asked me what I love about my husband, I could name off a bunch of major things in a heartbeat and then go on for a couple of days about the “minor” stuff, but of course there are lots of little things that I wouldn’t remember off the top of my head…unless I got an unexpected reminder. I’ve got one for ya. Thanks for asking. Here is how I test a pen, to see if it writes: Here is how he does it: I love that. Makes me smile every time! What are some of the little things *you* love about your significant other?

Flash Flood Watch! Er, I Mean, Watch! Flash Flood!

You might recall that back in December, we had some amazing rain come through here, and in order to save our family room from being flooded, Jim made a siphon out of a garden hose and I dug a trench from our back yard halfway to our front yard, in order to drain out the major lake that had formed back there. I’m not going to bother sending you to that post, because it was hella-long and about all sorts of different things that happened over Hanukkah week. Never fear. You’re gonna get to see Round 2 of the Wells Family’s Throwdown with Mother Nature. It’s still sort of Winter…

    The Pact

Note: This post is part of Fatherhood Friday at Dad Blogs, where all the cool kids are hanging out. (Moms are welcome over there!) Welcome to my visitors from DB; thanks for stopping in! If you’re a long-time reader, you know that Jim and I are equal partners in everything. We run our house like a well-oiled machine about 99.9% of the time. I am “lucky” in that he has no qualms about doing laundry, washing dishes, vacuuming, or any of those “traditional woman jobs”, and he is “lucky” that I have no qualms about cutting the grass, taking out the trash, being his ever-ready assistant with home repairs, or…

Frozen Birthday Fun in the Windy City

Jim’s birthday on Friday was one for the books. Poor guy had to spend the morning home, waiting for a tow truck (I happen to know lots about that, having had my car towed 4 times between late September and November…) because his truck sprung a fuel line leak. The -50 degree windchill didn’t help matters. But at least he got to wait for the tow at home, while I taught class and took the boys, who were off from school, on a birthday errand. In the evening, we went to dinner at Lou Malnati’s for Chicago deep dish pizza. YUM-O. Although the downtown area of our particular suburb has…

    Auld Lang Syne

Disclaimer: This New Year’s Eve Recap is not for Dork-a-phobes. We had a GREAT time on New Year’s Eve. We were invited to the home of two of our oldest friends; actually they are our oldest “Couple” friends. (does that make sense?) Dawn and Scott live almost 90 minutes south of here and we only get together once or twice each year; although I wish we lived closer, our time together always ends up being worth the wait. Due to the length of the drive to and from their house, I was trying to figure out who I would ask to give Roxie a potty break while we were gone…

It’s Been Quite a Journey So Far, My Love!

I want to wish a Happy 22nd Anniversary* to my husband and best friend! Words can’t express how much I love you but I wanted to tell you (and I will, don’t worry…you won’t have to just read it here on my blog!) how much I appreciate you and thank my lucky stars that we not only got together (after much stalking on my behalf), but STAYED together after all these years. I am proud to tell people that we have the special kind of relationship that beats the odds, especially the slim chances that young marrieds (as we were, at just-turned-eighteen and almost-twenty) have. One of my fave photos…

Eight Crazy Posts! (#8) (Finally!) (Whew!)

In this, the last of eight crazy posts, I have a few reflections on and memories of Hanukkah 2008 that I’d like to share. Last Sunday: First night of Hanukkah. Awesome night; had to dust off the cellphone rules (and adjust them a bit) because the thirteen-year-old was getting a cellphone for Hanukkah! If you did not read my first post in March about cellphone rules for your kid, it’s a must-read. Click here! It was quite exciting and I took video, but because we used the actual video camera (instead of the “video feature” on my regular digital camera), it can only be burned to DVD and not uploaded…
