What Kind of Gift Should I Buy For An Eagle Scout?? (I’ll Tell You!)
By far, the general search topic that brings people to Suburban Scrawl (besides the “Melisa with one S” search, of course) is anything that has to do with “Eagle Scout”. As it turns out, there really isn’t much out there regarding etiquette for Court of Honor speeches and gift-giving. People ask me about the gift-giving thing all the time anyway, so I thought I’d write a post about it as a public service, you know, because I’m all about giving the people what they want. First, for you folks who arrived here because of a search and may not know from being a regular reader what it means to be…

Acts of Bravery
It’s Prom Season! Did you know that? If you’re not a parent or if you have small children, you probably don’t put any thought into the biggest dance of the year at all, but in my house the chatter is in full force. It was a given that the older boy and his girlfriend of six months would be going. She bought her dress last Saturday and has put much thought into her hair and other details, but then preparations had to cease because there was one detail that my son had to take care of: he had to ASK her. HUH? I know. And it’s not even that easy.…

Just a Reminder…
It’s been a while since I have done a shameless self promotion post on this, so I guess today is as good a day as any to use this space for just that reason. Some of you newer readers may have absolutely no idea that I actually have a book out there. It’s called Remembering Ruby: For Families Living Beyond the Loss of a Pet. Although the target age range is 4-9 (ish), it’s really a book meant for families to share together. I can also say that many adults have told me that they read it and found the story to be very helpful. The book has two parts.…

Take A Picture; It’ll Last Longer.
Over the weekend I attended a bloggers and brands event at the Hard Rock Hotel Chicago, hosted by Silicon Valley Moms Group and sponsored by some incredible companies, which I’ll write about on my review blog over the next couple of days. Due to the construction mess on the Eisenhower, I left really, really early and–much to my delight–arrived at the Hard Rock approximately an hour early. It was the perfect amount of time to take a walk around the block and take some pictures of the city I love so much. I posted my favorite shots yesterday including this one, the subject of which happens to be in my…

May the Triforce Be With Him!
Years ago, when he was about seven or eight, the older boy used to spend hours (upon hours, upon hours) playing his Game Boy. To say he was obsessed with gaming back then would be a slight understatement. He was convinced that he was going to grow up and “help Nintendo out” by giving them ideas for new games. In fact, at one point he decided that he didn’t want to wait until he grew up; he crafted a letter to Nintendo USA that detailed his game idea and why they should manufacture it. He received a really nice letter from the company, thanking him for writing but explaining that…

The Time My Kid Almost Became Nicole Kidman’s Husband. Well, sort of. (Part 2)
Yesterday I wrote about D and his debut in the school play when he was in fourth grade. You’ll need to read that (click here) before you go on to today’s post; that’s why I named them “Part 1” and “Part 2”, get it? When he was in fifth grade, people were still talking about his role as the Kolokolo Bird and asking him to “KAW!” (And no, it wasn’t just ME doing that. Really: it was other people, like teachers!) He was very blase’ about the whole thing; he liked the attention but was by this time into other things, namely reading the series of children’s books called “A…
