I would guess that contrary to what they do or say, all new parents know deep down that comparing their child to another is not a good idea. All of the parenting books say so, anyway. We all know that all children are different, yet playgroups are full of insecure parents who are worried that little one-year-old Johnny isn’t walking as well as one-year-old MacKenzie, or that Susie can string three words together while Becky has yet to say anything, and Becky is six months older. And it doesn’t stop when the kids have outgrown the playgroups and move on to school. One mom might tell a friend about how…

They Think I’m Nuts…But It’s All Part of the Plan.
My family members really, really like salt, probably more than they should. “Please pass the salt” is something heard over our dinner table countless times, as is the tune “Here Comes the Bride”. Huh? Yes, you read that correctly. Whenever I pass the salt, I pass the pepper with it, and I hum the first few bars of “Here Comes the Bride”. I grabbed this family portrait and description from the Nick, Jr. website Although the Nick, Jr. show “Blue’s Clues” (one of our family favorites, back in the day!) has taught kids that Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper are INDEED married*, I am convinced that surely that television relationship…

Crossing That Bridge Because We Came To It
The older boy and I met my sister Julesie at the riverwalk today, so she could take his senior pictures. It wasn’t the first attempt; it was the third. Last time, we were in Tennessee for Thanksgiving and although she took a couple of rolls, he was really crabby that day and she said it showed through in the pictures. The first time we tried, it was way too windy and cold. I posted one picture from that session; if you don’t remember it, you must click here, especially if you need a laugh. We had high hopes for today, and it went very well. I’ll post a couple when…

Get To Know Project Runway’s Laura Bennett
If you know me “in real life” or happen to follow me on Twitter, you know that I am a huge fan of “Project Runway“. HUGE. If it is at all possible, my entire world comes to a screeching halt when the show is broadcast on Thursday nights so I can watch and also take part in the Clever Girls Collective Project Runway Twitter party. When it’s not possible, I’m watching it at 5:45 a.m. on Friday morning. If you’re a regular reader, you’ll remember how Sue rocked my world by not only getting a headshot of Tim Gunn at last year’s BlogHer conference (okay, and signing it herself on…

Rolling Out the Red Carpet
When I was growing up, I remember hearing stories about how our mom’s entire group of friends was constantly at her house, listening to 45’s and hanging out. Her house was the go-to house; she said it was always crawling with teenagers there. Although I’m sure my mom was a vivacious teenager and had great qualities that drew people to her, my grandparents must have made visitors to their home feel very, very welcome: teenagers typically don’t linger where they aren’t comfortable. Mom really wanted the same sort of upbringing for Julesie and me, too, and she was always open for visitors. Our dad? Well, he felt the same. And,…
