    In Concert

Considering that Jim is into heavy metal and rock, D is into alternative and rock, J is into electronica, and I’m into pop and electronica (mostly), the fact that there are a few select recording artists that all four of us really, really like is pretty amazing. Related: I will tell you that Jim and I have dreams for our boys. Concert dreams. For years, we have told the boys that their first concert would be that of one of these select few artists, so we could all go together. You see, I have always wanted my sons’ first concert experience to be wonderful, because I am a little embarrassed…

    Hey Mr. DJ…

Look what J recently purchased for himself! He has been practicing, and displays some mad skills! It’s enough to make an electronica/techno/house/trance/dubstep-lovin’ mom cry proud and happy tears. Video to come soon! Want to make this a long-term commitment? My Favorite Festive Workout Music Shall Be Your Favorite, Too. (Well, Maybe)

I find that most people who exercise regularly are often on the hunt for good workout music. People who know me personally ask me about it pretty often (in fact, Heather, did I ever send you that CD or is it lost on my kitchen desk??), and I love talking about workout music possibilities with anyone who will listen. It’s been a while since I posted one of my group cycling (also, Spinning) playlists here, and thought that now would be a good time. (Technically, it’s probably not a good time: it’s probably too late. Oh well.) On the two Wednesdays before Christmas, I pull out and play my holiday…

    Something Old, Something New

My Dad is a very interesting fellow, one-of-a-kind, for sure. He’s hilarious most of the time, he is very smart with more common sense than most, and he makes the best prime rib you would EVER taste, as evidenced by the fact that he made that for us for dinner on Friday night and I still can’t get it out of my head. He’s not without faults, though. His intense dislike for anything Will Ferrell has ever done–especially “Elf”–is something he talks about enough to make me wonder if he really likes “Elf” deep down but has talked so much trash about it that he would never admit it. (Not.)…

    Grown-Up Groupie

When I was in high school, I was crazy—CRAZY—about the band Berlin. Though their biggest hit was “Take My Breath Away” from the “Top Gun” soundtrack, that came later on and the song really doesn’t represent the kind of band they were. I loved their earliest stuff, which was heavy with synthesizers, starting with the albums “Information” and “Pleasure Victim”. I listened to that music all the time, and naturally knew every song by heart. My friends and I watched MTV for hours a day, and whenever the video for “The Metro” came on, I was glued. Soon “No More Words” got heavy rotation on the radio, and in turn…

Reestablishing Chicago As The House Music Capital of the World

I had a conversation on Facebook yesterday that made me positively giddy. I was in a back-and-forth with my friend who you might remember: Jane the Phoole from the Bristol Renaissance (Ren-AY-sance) Faire. One of the things I adore about “Jane” is that she may spend her summer days dressed up in 16th century chic, but she spends her nights listening to House music, which is SO NOT 16th century. The juxtaposition of Jane’s (whose real name is Ann) Facebook statuses cracks me up on a regular basis, because how funny is it to see that one day during Ren Faire season she’s posting something like this: “Join Jane the…

    Happy 5771!

I wanted to take a second to wish my Jewish readers a great big L’shanah Tovah Tikatevu: may you be inscribed for a good year! (For my 2008 informational post about Rosh Hashanah, click here.) We’re off to services at our temple in a bit, but don’t think I’m taking off without leaving you some entertainment! I’m over at The Music Mamas today, recapping some of the crazy stuff that’s happened over the years at the MTV Video Music Awards. Click here to check it out! ©2010 Suburban Scrawl

Chris Blake Has NOT Been To Germany.

Chris Blake is a alternative pop/rock singer and songwriter, based in Los Angeles. He is a friend of The Music Mamas (dare I say “the adopted son”? Maybe brother. Whatev.), and his new EP just dropped. Before I tell you about all the fun and games associated with that, I wanted to share a conversation that Chris and I had when we sat down together the other day, over coffee and croissants*. I told Chris that I’m in the middle of a posting blitz about my trip to Germany, and thought it would be nice to put a little bit of German content in this post, you know, so it…

Bursting At The Seams, I Had To Put One Elsewhere.

Because I have a very intimidating number of posts in the hopper, so to speak, I figured that putting my post about music in Germany over at The Music Mamas would be prudent. I included some great links you should definitely click on, and a short playlist (thanks for the assist, Ri!) as well. Click here to check it out…and then stop back in here later this evening for more German-themed fun! ©2010 Suburban Scrawl
