    Congratulations Uno!!! Arroooooooo!!

If you’re joining us from Manic Mommy’s blog, welcome! The post you’re here specifically to read is the next one down (but you’re welcome to sit a spell…). I just HAD to put this up today, since the beagle is my breed! Many congratulations to Uno (formal name: K-Run’s Park Me in First) and Aaron Wilkerson, his handler, on the first-ever beagle win at the Westminster Kennel Club’s Dog Show. Roxie says, “Hey Hot Stuff, congratulations. Wanna spend some time with a saucy Suburban little Beagle Lady, who’s sweet on the outside but sinful on the inside? Call me!”

    Just Another Manic Tuesday

We interrupt your regularly scheduled Bar Mitzvah summary for a brief report on the current events of today.** After a weekend of eating lots of CRAP, I recommitted myself to watching the diet again, to continue on my path of losing some excess pounds. Going for a drive in snowy Suburbia to run an errand (and of course, try to sell more books) in my cute little black car, I suddenly detected an obstacle to my willpower as a sweet smell wafted into my car and up to my nose. I knew that smell anywhere. It was Dunkin Donuts. “I…will…not…stop…for…donuts!” I said to myself as I tried to speed up…

    Only Slightly Freaky Friday

So here’s the first part of how the weekend went down. Shabbat (the Sabbath) is celebrated by Jews from Friday at sundown until Saturday at sundown. We have prayer services on Friday evenings and on Saturday mornings. The main portion of the Bar Mitzvah is celebrated on Saturday mornings, but he still participates (this is how it goes at our temple, anyway) in a small part of the service on Friday night. What’s good about that is that he was able to get a feel for being up there in front of everybody before the actual “Big Day”. The first time he went up there to lead a prayer, he…

    Here’s SOME of the 4-1-1!!

Some of you have expressed interest not only in the fun details of how our weekend went, but also more information about a Bar Mitzvah in general, and I’m happy to oblige! I was trying to figure out a way to not get too “Textbook-ish” about it, and it finally occurred to me to just post the wording from the programs we handed out at the temple for our guests! I mean, DUH! So, this post will be informational in nature. I have taken out some names, but I’m sure you’ll have no trouble figuring it out. (By the way, if you are Jewish and need some wording for your…

    What a Weekend!

Well, our son is finally a “Man in Jews”!* I don’t have much time this morning to post about it because we’re exhausted and it would actually be infringing upon our pre-scheduled “Family Pajama Day”, but I wanted to check in with the blog world and tell you that everything yesterday went FABULOUSLY. I’ll post more over the next couple of days, especially when I get the good photos back from Julie and the funny ones back from the disposable cameras we put on every table, for our guests to use. These photos aren’t great but they’ll do for now! More soon! *Background story: Some time before our older son…

He’s Ready! (and so are we!)

We had the rehearsal for Saturday’s Bar Mitzvah last night. Jim, the kids and I met the thirteen-year-old’s Hebrew tutor and the Rabbi at the temple for the run-through. It went really, really well. I couldn’t believe that my younger son was up there; time flies by and before you know it, they’re 13 years old, 5’4″, with a deep voice that can’t hit the high parts of some of the stuff he had to sing. I started feeling a little emotional. He is so totally ready for this, it’s not even funny. His tutor gave him a lovely gift. It’s a book about Jewish values and he wrote a…

Five Eight Eight, Two Three Hundred…

Our honeycomb blinds in our bedroom FINALLY broke last week. They came with the house and although they matched our bedding back then (7 years ago), we bought a lovely new bedding set last year and although the blinds became hideous, we didn’t want to open up the wallet to get new ones yet, because we wanted to replace them with the faux wood blinds and those are more expensive. So, with the timing that is typical in this house, the blinds “chose” to break the week before the Bar Mitzvah. We knew who to call; we had faux wood blinds installed in the family room a couple of years…

An Ugly Cake For a Handsome Kid

So the THIRTEEN-year-old’s birthday went well on Sunday; very low-key. I didn’t expect much fanfare, considering we had the birthday lunch last weekend at the Signature Room and this coming weekend is the big Bar Mitzvah. It was a nice day. Aunt Joodie/Doody/Juzie/Jooie came over and we made homemade pizza (using our cousin Eric’s dough recipe: it’s a winner!) for dinner and had assorted appetizers too. We were the only home, apparently, in America that did not watch the Super Bowl. Instead, we watched the Brian Regan DVD. Then of course, it was time for Rainbow Cake. I had asked the boy on Saturday if he wanted me to make…

No More Tweens In This House…

Thirteen years ago today I was resting comfortably after giving birth to a 9 pound, 11 ounce little munchkin. (Ouch) He is Mr. Personality, he is smart, he is caring, he has a great sense of humor, and there are so many other things I love about him I could go on for days…but if I do that, then I’ll be spending his birthday HERE at the computer instead of UPSTAIRS with the Birthday Boy. So, for your enjoyment, here’s a walk down our Memory Lane. Thank goodness we have a world-class photographer in the family; she’s responsible for a few of these! Aww! Three days old. One of my…
