Weirdest Halloween Ever.

Halloween came and went (as it tends to do), and for the first time in twenty years we didn’t have a kid in costume. Not only that, but Halloween was almost–dare I say it?–exactly like any other day. It was bizarre to say the least.

In fact, when J left for school, he said goodbye to me like he always does and walked out before I even remembered that it was Halloween at all.

My decorations, as I’ve written about before, were pitiful.

I didn’t even have time to take pictures of Roxie in her 2012 costume because I took a TDM class in the morning and then worked on the bathroom floor all afternoon.

J came home and when I asked him what his plans were for the evening, he replied with “Well, my back hurts so I’m going to lay down and read. Then I’m going to get the oil changed in my car.” Not a word about a costume, a get-together with friends, or even the Tootsie Rolls and Skittles that were on the counter, waiting for young trick-or-treaters to visit our door.

Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t walking around all teary-eyed over it. It was just…weird. It only got more strange when I went to Zumba class at 5:45 (In past years I would have been home taking care of trick-or-treaters and making sure I knew where J would be hanging out and/or trick-or-treating with friends) and then drove through my neighborhood on the way home, passing a hundred young kids who were running from house to house in full costume.

J had been helping to answer the door, and proved himself to be quite the critic (a hilarious one, at that) via his Twitter account:

I don’t know; change is good sometimes. I think I am a fan of this new kind of Halloween!

Our Halloween was kind of nothing, too. It drizzled here and we had about half of our usual 200 trick-or-treaters. Plus no one in the neighborhood decorated very much, so things looked like you said: “exactly like any other day.” Very different.

I hear ya. I have 2 teenagers, and I was the only one excited about Halloween. Of course, they’re never too old to eat Kit-Kat bars.

Our Halloween was much the same as yours. We have had snow so we didn’t even have school. Halloween should not be a snow day. The day after Halloween maybe that would be a good snow day(for teachers).

It is strange when your kids start getting older. I’ve ALWAYS been a fan of Halloween. Our son, on the other hand, enjoys it…but more in the “meh” way of enjoying it.

Me: So, want to work on a zombie costume? We could do this and that and this and that and I’ll do your make up and, and, and…
    Him: Umm…uh, I dunno. Maybe I’ll go as a baseball player…again.
Me: But we could rip jeans and use red nail polish as blood on them…
Him: Hmm, yeah, that would be cool….but, um….I dunno if I feel like having that makeup on my face and stuff….but maybe next year….
Me: Yeah, sure…whatever. Go find yourself a bag. One without a hole in it.

    Sigh.
