I’m the Dinosaur Who is Still Sending Holiday Cards.

I read a great post by my friend Kari called “Why I’m Not Sending Everyone a Christmas Card This Year” and, after leaving her a comment, decided to expand on my thoughts here. I haven’t been sending holiday cards ever since the very beginning of my and Jim’s marriage in 1986 but I don’t think it was too many years before I started making my address list and checking it twice. My holiday card selection/creation process has definitely evolved over the years (much like our refrigerator). In the first few years I picked them up from the store. More specifically, I picked them up from the Hallmark store my mom…

    Taking Stock

I decided to jump on the “Taking Stock” bandwagon, which I first read at Laurie’s site. She got it from “Meet Me At Mike’s”. I thought it looked fun; we’ll see if I still think so at the end. Now that I’m reading through it all, it seems like a lot of work. Ready? Let’s go. Making: Holiday cookies and deviled eggs (not simultaneously). I’m making the boys’ favorite holiday cookies so they can take some home when they go back to the Chicago area on Sunday AND so Jim and I can enjoy some cookies but not thousands of them. The deviled eggs are, along with wine, what we’re…

What To Say, What Not To Say

This NaBloPoMo month of writing daily has been much harder for me than it usually is for several reasons, one of which is that I was away from home for two weeks and, rather than scheduling posts ahead of time like I usually do when I know I’ll be gone, I blogged from my phone. Writing daily is the idea of November NaBloPoMo participation, of course, but I’m not sure if I’ve ever gotten through it in the last decade without pre-scheduling a single post. Oddly enough, I think I have done a better job with much of what I’ve written this year so that’s a good takeaway for me.…

    Research is Formalized Curiosity.

I have always been a curious person. Some might call it nosey, and admittedly on occasion that’s true. Mostly I just have an insatiable thirst for knowledge about lots of different things. I was sitting here watching “Price is Right” with my mom (yes, on purpose!), and I started thinking about how I would prepare to be a potential contestant on the show. If I had tickets to be in the audience, you can bet my butt would be living at Best Buy for two weeks before the taping, doing pricing research. In addition, I’d be consulting with a travel agent on the varying costs of world travel to many…

    Dream Home

One of the things I love about traveling is checking out the home styles that are popular or traditional in any given area. This weekend I was in Horseshoe Bay, Texas, enjoying a girls’ weekend at a gorgeous vacation home, courtesy of my friend’s generous in-laws. One morning a group of us took a walk around the resort area and I was struck by the beauty of the homes there. Several of them had so many windows that one could see all the way through the homes to the water behind them. (I love looking inside other people’s homes! But not in a creepy way!) The landscaping was generally amazing. Other…
